The completed cutting bench and micrometer straight edge. Two $8.99 dial
indicator depth gauges (1" throw, 0.001" graduations) were installed over
the twin screws which move the straight edge.
Unused sections of cutting mat seen on the left.
Tensioning springs minimize the movement slop in the assembly.
Adjustable stop bar for the dial indicators allows the cutting process to
be started at any point in the travel of the cutting edge.
Several cutting strategies have been attempted to date, including attempts at cutting multiple ribbons by layering sheets of aluminum foil. The only method that has produced at perfect ribbon to date is that which cuts a single sheet of foil.
It seems at this point that producing the ribbons themselves will be
a costly process in terms of time. Merely getting the foil 'grain' aligned
and taped down to the cutting mat has proved to be a challenging process,
requiring much diligence and patience.
