Who uses what where:

It's hard to tell simply from specs what each recommended driver is likely to sound like once it's in a completed system. Fortunately, many of the listed drivers (and some unlisted ones as well) are used in commercial systems. One ironic fact of business life is that the high-end vendors are the most likely to use the same off-the-shelf drivers available to the DIY market. If you're selling thousands of $500 speakers, you can afford to have custom-made drivers (usually available in lots no smaller than 100 ea.). If your goal is to sell maybe a half dozen $50,000 speakers, you can't afford to go the full custom OEM route. The following list summarizes which drivers are used in which systems. Notes: Some of the listed vendors are no longer in business. Similarly, some of the listed systems are no longer in production. Also note that in many cases, although the driver is standard, each may be selected for specific parameters and/or slightly modified by the system builders. Extensively modified drivers are not listed. Many modifications involve only creating a custom face plate (for tweeters) or dust cap (for cone drivers) with the system vendor's name and/or logo. Complete commercial systems are listed separately from kits. For kits, see Section 15. Where possible, system prices are quoted. This is a double-edged sword, though. Knowing the specific drivers employed in a system only gets you part way to duplicating their sound. In addition to the drivers, any system's performance will be critically affected by both cabinet and crossover design. For the most part, only high-end systems are listed. Available high-end systems use a variety of different types and sizes of drivers, just as does any cross-section of the industry, but uses them in no-compromise designs. By listing only high-end systems, the potential economies of DIY are fully highlighted. Still, and as noted in the opening paragraph and item 3 above, using the same drivers doesn't mean you can build comparable high-end systems without the same degree of cabinetry and crossover expertise available to the systems manufacturers. Not all drivers in this list are otherwise listed in the LDSG. Some drivers, such as the venerable KEF B139 are simply no longer readily available to the DIY market. Others aren't listed because the system manufacturer's modifications and/or selection criteria are what push them over the line from the mundane to the exceptional. Finally, there are the drivers (typically most metal cones and Kevlar drivers) which present crossover design challenges which are beyond the skills of all but the most savvy DIY'er.
