Recommended drivers summary:

The following tables summarize the drivers recommended above. Prices are approximate and, as always, subject to change. Prices were obtained from various distributors and may not represent the lowest possible prices. Only the most basic technical parameters are included for comparison purposes.

Notes:

  1. To conserve columnar space, "V-T" means Versa-Tronics, "S-S" means Scan-Speak, "BG" means Bohlender Graebener, "TAD" means TAD-Pioneer, "SA" means Stage Accompany, and "MS" means Martin Sound.
  2. Where applicable, prices reflect discounts available to DIYspeakers list members.
  3. "§" in the left column denotes a magnetically shielded unit suitable for home theater applications.
  4. "†" in the left column means that a magnetically shielded version of this driver is available.
  5. "‡" in the left column indicates a driver which, although not advertised as being magnetically shielded, has very little stray magnetic field and which may therefore be used in most applications calling for a shielded driver.
  6. "dome*" Denotes an inverted dome.
  7. "N.A." Manufacturer does not specify and no 3rd party measurement data is available.
  8. In comparing the Xmax specs, be sure to go back and reread note #4 in the first part of the "Driver guidelines - Mid/Bass drivers" in Section 2! Since I would otherwise run out of columnar space, values of Xmax which can be confirmed as true +/- values are quoted using a period as a decimal point (e.g. 11.2). Where the Xmax value can only be quoted from the manufacturer's literature without verification, a comma is used as the decimal point (e.g. 11,2).
