Vendor guidelines - Dayton:

Dayton is an is Parts Express' "house brand". Their 6.5", 10", 12", and 15" drivers have been recommended by several people for DIY use in both sealed and vented boxes. Along with good numbers, most feature stamped steel frames with the added advantage of very attractive pricing. Specific recommendations include:

  1. The Titanic 1200 (Parts Express part #295-400) is effectively a clone of the NHT 1259. This isn't bad - imitation is, after all, the sincerest form of flattery. The parameters are very close to the original, but not identical in all respects. The price is the same. Like the 1259, the Titanic can easily reach below 20 Hz in a vented box, or 30 Hz in a sealed box. Unlike the 1259, the Titanic can be mounted horizontally.  view

  2. The Titanic 1000 (Parts Express part #295-410) is the "baby brother" to the Titanic 1200. As with the similar ACI SV10, demand for this driver currently oustrips supply. Also as with the SV10, initial feedback has been very positive.  view

  3. The 12"DVC (Parts Express part #295-185) is Parts Express' answer to the Adire Shiva. As a Shiva clone, most Shiva comments apply.  view

  4. The 15"DVC (Parts Express part #295-190). Just as the 295-185 is a Shiva clone, the 295-190 is Parts Express' answer to the Adire Tempest. Unlike the 295-185, this clone is technically inferior to its inspiration in several respects. However, it also costs less than a Tempest.  view

  5. The Series II 15" woofer (Parts Express part #295-130) is an excellent value - a low cost, high quality design capable of reaching below 30 Hz in a vented alignment with over 110 dB displacement-limited SPL at F3.  view

  6. The Series II 12" woofer (Parts Express part #295-120) is an excellent value - a low cost, high quality design capable of reaching below 40 Hz in a vented alignment with over 115 dB displacement-limited SPL at F3.  view

  7. The Series II 10" woofer (Parts Express part #295-110) is an excellent value - a low cost, high quality design capable of reaching below 50 Hz in a vented alignment with over 110 dB displacement-limited SPL at F3.  view

  8. The Parts Express #295-305 6.5" polymer cone woofer has been recommended by several people as an excellent value - a low cost, high quality design with smooth FR, capable of reaching below 50 Hz in a vented alignment with over 100 dB displacement-limited SPL at F3.  view

  9. The Parts Express #275-070 1" tweeter has been recommended by several people. Often used for high-value projects with the 295-305, it's priced similarly to the Axon T1, but has been recommended as a better performer when a magnetically shielded driver isn't required.  view   response   waterfall

  10. The Parts Express #295-315 10" treated paper cone woofer (Parts Express part #295-315) is an outstanding value -  a low cost, high quality design suitable for almost any budget.  view

  11. The Parts Express #295-085 18" woofer was designed for pro sound applications, but has been used successfully by some DIYer's for home hi-fi. Like many pro sound drivers, it's designed for use in ported or horn loaded enclosures, and features only moderate values of Fs and Xmax compared to subwoofers designed for home hi-fi (e.g. the Adire Maelstrom). Unlike other recommended Dayton drivers, but typical of pro sound drivers, the 295-085 features a cast frame and cloth surround. One of its main attractions is its price.  view
