Once upon a time, there were a couple of speaker system manufacturers called EPI
(Epicure) and Genesis. EPI came first, founded by Winslow Burhoe. Later, several EPI
employees left and formed Genesis Physics Corp., using the guiding principles
originated at EPI. Both eventually disappeared, but not before building some very
highly regarded speakers. Their designs were simplicity itself - take a proprietary
1" inverted dome tweeter and mate it one of several similar 6" or 8" mid/bass units.
Although most units used sealed enclosures, some used passive radiator (PR)
designs.
Flash forward a few years… Both EPI and Genesis are out of business, yet a young
man named Huw Powell, who worked at Genesis, starts a business supplying replacement
drivers for EPI and Genesis speakers. Today, this business is called Human Speakers.
They manufacture not only replacement drivers for EPI and Genesis, but raw drivers
for DIY'ers as well as completed systems in the EPI/Genesis tradition.
As with its progenitors, Human's raw driver line is simplicity itself - a single
tweeter, and a short list of 6" and 8" drivers which differ only in parameters. They
also sell passive radiators in 8", 10", and 12" sizes. All are attractively priced
and, based on their heritage, all can be safely recommended.
I have been in touch with Mr. Burhoe and he offered the following comments, quoted
with his expressed permission and encouragement…
| " |
I was the one who hired Huw when I was at Genesis, and have encouraged
him in his business, especially in taking on EPI driver replacement."
"Huw's shop is only 30 minutes from me and I have often visited. I
occasionally use his drivers and am impressed with his faithfulness to
the original designs. As far as I know, his business practices are of the
highest integrity." |
One caveat, though - Human's woofers and mid/basses only come in 6 or 2 ohm versions
(only the 6 ohm versions are listed). If you're building a design requiring two of
these drivers, it's better for your amplifier to use two of the 2 ohm drivers in
series rather than two of the 6 ohm drivers in parallel.
Drivers of note are:
- The 002B concave aluminum dome
tweeter is equivalent to the most advanced designs from EPI and/or Genesis. It
features low distortion, extremely wide dispersion, and an exceptionally clean
FR from 1800 Hz to 26 kHz. Winslow Burhoe himself has said that this tweeter
"is far better than any I had designed either for EPI or Genesis. Even though
it is a more or less exact copy of my design, it uses much better materials."
Why does it work so well? After all, it does have a very high Fs. The secret is
its relatively low Q of about 0.6 which allows it to be used as low as Fs,
plus its huge Xmax (1.52 mm) and high power handling ability. In EPI,
Genesis, and Human systems, it has been successfully crossed over as low as
1,500 Hz with only a single capacitor.

- The 002M concave aluminum dome
tweeter is simply a 002B with a circular face plate (and a lower price!) All
comments for the 002B therefore apply as well to the 002M.

The Human 002's, along with the
AccutonC223/6,
Hiquphon OW I/II/III,
Scan-Speak R2904/7000,
Morel MDM33, and the
Alison Acoustics 4010203
(available only as a replacement part for Allison loudspeakers) are
considered by many to be the ultimate electrodynamic tweeters.

- The 005 extra long-throw 8"
woofer boasts the largest Xmax value of any of Human's line of 6" and 8"
woofers. Attractively priced, its only major shortcomings are its use of a foam
surround (although Human is willing to build units to order with a butyl
surround) and a slightly lower than average sensitivity. Although not
specifically designed for it, the 005 has also gained a reputation as one of
the best 8" woofers for DIY autosound applications.

- The 007 long-throw 6" mid/bass
offers exceptional performance in either vented or sealed enclosures. Its Xmax
value, smaller than the 005's, is still greater than any other recommended 6"
driver except the best Scan-Speak's - which cost almost three times as much!
All other comments for the 005 apply to the 007 as well.
- The 054 4" midrange is noted
only in passing. This is an excellent paper-coned driver, but is actually
simply a Vifa M10MD-39-08 selected for use with Human's
own drivers. As sold by Human, it is packaged with Vifa's M10IC injection
molded plastic chamber. You can buy both the driver and plastic cup more
cheaply from most Vifa dealers.
