Vendor guidelines - Madisound:

Madisound is one of the largest distributors/dealers of loudspeaker components and kits in the world. Not suprisingly, they have "house brand" drivers in addition to those of other venders represented here in the LDSG. Madisound's private label drivers are sold under the names:
  • Skaaning
  • Sonicraft
  • Sledgehammer
  • NHT
  • Swan
Each will be discussed in detail separately below. Generally, the Skaaning drivers are the most advanced and most expensive. The Sonicraft line competes well against most drivers in the medium price range. The Sledgehammer line is Madisound's value line, offering less sophistication at a budget price.

Vendor guidelines - Skaaning drivers

AudioTechnology is one of the world's more highly regarded manufacturers of ultimate quality drivers - its Flex Units series. Since the company employs the talents of Ejvind Skaaning, a founder of both Scan-Speak and Dynaudio, some of its drivers are sold into the DIY market by Madisound under Skaaning brand name. Three Skaaning branded products are currently available. For more information on AudioTechnology Flex Units, see the recommendations in Section 2.

  1. The SK130-308 is an 8 ohm version of the 5" AudioTechnology FlexUnit. The FR curve is +/- 2 kHz from 100 Hz to 1 kHz, with a 3 dB peak extending to 5 kHz, and generally well-behaved roll off above that. The impedance curve is essentially flat above the resonance peak out past 10 kHz. Note that my respondents have recommended the similar Audio Technology 4H521306 as superior.  response
  2. The SK170-308 is an 8 ohm version of the 6.5" AudioTechnology FlexUnit. An outstanding driver, the FR curve is +/- 2 kHz from 100 Hz to 5 kHz, and generally well-behaved roll off above that. The impedance curve is essentially flat above the resonance peak out past 10 kHz.  view   response
  3. The SK300-304 is a 4 ohm version of the 12" AudioTechnology FlexUnit. An outstanding driver, the FR curve is +/- 2 kHz from below 40 Hz to beyond 1 kHz, and generally well-behaved roll off above that. The impedance curve is essentially flat above the resonance peak out to 1 kHz, with only gentle rise thereafter.  view   response

Vendor guidelines - Sonicraft drivers:

Not to be confused with Sonic Craft, the Madisound Sonicraft line includes two subwoofers which have been recommended. Both are 12" models, but each is quite different from the other.
  1. The SC-1250 is a medium-Q, high-compliance design well suited for sealed enclosures. In a large enclosure, it will achieve F3 in the low-30's with good voltage sensitivity.  view
  2. The SC12NRT is built for Madisound by Aura, using Aura's patented NeoRadial Technology (NRT). This produces and inherently shielded driver - a rarity for a 12" subwoofer. Another benefit of the Aura NRT motor is improved distortion compared to more conventional drivers such as the Aidre Shiva or Dayton Titanic. A higher-Q, lower compliance design, most SC-1250 comments still generally apply.  view   response   distortion

Vendor guidelines - Sledgehammer drivers:

Sledgehammer is Madisound's economy line. Although nowhere near the state of the art, the following drivers do represent good value for experimentation or cost-sensitive projects:
  1. The 6102-4 is an economy 6.5" with a PP cone and vented pole piece.  view   response
  2. The 1052DVC is an economy 10" with a PP cone and dual voice coils.  view   response
  3. The 1252DVC is an economy 12" with a PP cone and dual voice coils.  view   response

Vendor guidelines - NHT 1259:

Not really a Madisound brand, Madisound still sells the popular NHT 1259 driver. NHT originally developed this driver as part of its high-end NHT 3.3 system. Thanks to Ken Kantor, it became available to the DIY community and has been a perennial favorite ever since. Although it has been surpassed by some newer designs, it's still one of the best 12" sealed box subwoofers ever made.  view   in-system response

Vendor guidelines - Swan 305:

The Swan 305 was designed long ago for a loudspeaker system long since forgotten. With one of the most favorable performance-to-cost ratios available in a subwoofer, the 305 is still a favorite for lower-cost systems.  view   response
