McCauley is primarily a vendor of commercial sound (sound reinforcement &
stage) speakers. One product of special interest to DIY'ers:
- The McCauley 6174 is an impressive
18" subwoofer using a composite cone and rubber surround. Supported by an
impressive list of technical specs, the 6174 is almost in a class by itself,
clearly superior to offerings from, e.g. JBL and JL Audio. Its only serious
competition is the Aura 1808. The difference is that the Aura driver has an
extremely low Qts, rendering it unsuitable for anything other than vented
enclosures or assisted alignments. The 6174, while it can be used in a vented
enclosure, is also suitable for sealed or transmission line enclosures.
