PHL is a French company founded by former Audax employees. All PHL drivers share
some interesting design features. These include extreme environmental resistance to
UV humidity, and even salt spray (unusual for a coated paper cone driver); an
advanced motor design which greatly reduces distortion; and a motor "intercooler"
for improved power handling. Recommendations have been slow coming in for PHL, but
all the feedback I have so far is quite positive. I'll post all driver
recommendations as they come in. PHL has well-organized, moderately complete (no
curves) data sheets on their web site in .PDF format. It is worth noting, however,
that PHL's drivers have been extensively reviewed by Vance Dickason in Voice Coil
magazine (a professional trade journal). In all cases, the curves he published were
generally excellent, showing high end extension as claimed, flat passband response,
low distortion, and no nasty breakup modes.
- The 1220 (8 ohm) and
1230 (16 ohm) drivers are highly
efficient 6.5" mid/bass drivers with reportedly excellent sound quality. The
16 ohm 1230 in particular has already garnered an enthusiastic following
among users of tube/valve amplifiers, or used in parallel pairs.
