Usher Audio is a Taiwanese company which has been around for a while, but only
recently made a big splash in the DIY market. The reason is quite
simple - Usher builds Scan-Speak clones. Usher's DIY drivers look and
perform much like the Scan-Speak drivers which inspired them, but at a fraction of
Scan-Speak's price. Although Usher has a number of drivers, the following ones are
those for which I've received solid recommendations as this goes to press:
- The T9950 1" fabric dome tweeter
looks like one of the Scan-Speak 9300/9500/9700 family. It is slightly different,
though, with an 8 ohm impedance (vs. 6 ohms for the Scan-Speak's) and
slightly lower sensitivity than the Scan-Speak units.

- The 8955-W 7" mid/bass looks
almost exactly like the Scan-Speak 8545, using a similar carbon fiber/paper cone.
It is slightly different, though, with slightly lower values of Fs and Qts than
the Scan-Speak units.

Award-winning system designer Dennis Murphy discusses these drivers, and has plans
for a 2-way design using them, on his
web site.
